John's expertise as a speaker, educator, and leader in the solar industry:
- John has traveled throughout the US, Asia and South America several times to speak on a variety of renewable energy topics including using solar to power electric vehicles, practical uses of solar energy, global warming and what you can do about it, and many more.
- John has three times been a keynote speaker at the National Chinese Electric Vehicle Conference in Shanghai. In Japan he has spoken at new energy conferences in Tokyo, Osaka, Sapporo and is scheduled in Kobe in May 2025.
- John chaired the solar section and gave two presentations at the 2011 Low Carbon Earth Summit in Dalian, attended by over 1,000 energy experts from 58 countries.
- John has lectured to engineering students at Lioning University of Technology, environmental students at Soochow University, and international medical students at Lioning Medical University.
- John has conducted hundreds of workshops, including presentations for Solar Energy International, an assembly of 100 engineers of Hewett Packard, and hundreds of commercial and industrial customers of a major utility, Portland General Electric.
- John is a guest professor at several community colleges in the Portland area teaching courses on solar thermal, photovoltaics, powering electric vehicles with sunshine, and other practical applications for solar energy.
- John has given dozens of talks to high schools, middle schools and elementary schools in Oregon and Washington. The Gresham Outlook newspaper wrote a feature in it's Sustainable Living Section about John teaching at Gresham High School.
- John has written several published articles by Home Power, Solar Pro, and Solar Home Tour Magazines. In 2010 he released his first book: FOOTPRINT: A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to Extinction, published in English and Chinese.
- John is a founding member of the Oregon Solar Energy Industries Association (OSEIA), and has served twice as its President.
- John served as Chair of the Citizens' Utility Board of Oregon (CUB), a consumer advocacy group which can take credit for closing the State’s only nuclear and coal plants. The energy has been replaced primarily by wind, solar, and conservation.
- John has served on the Advisory Board of the Oregon Interfaith Council, a mufti-faith organization that promotes renewable energy as a moral imperative, and a member of the Fair and Clean Energy Coalition to promote renewable energy.
- John was one of only a handful of Americans invited to attend the international conference on solar cooking in Varesse, Italy, along with several dignitaries from around the world. After John’s presentation the moderator said, “That’s what we like about the Americans, that can-do attitude."
- John donated and installed solar panels on a dorm in Kanada, India, at the University of the Nations. The University specializes in international development and healthcare.
